Privacy policy
Effective October 14, 2026. What we collect, why, who helps us, and your choices.
This policy covers DIYMETAR LLC ("DIY METAR", "we", "us"): this website, our online store, email with us, and the DIY METAR hub that runs your map.
In short
- We collect what we need to sell you a kit, make your map, support it, and keep it updated.
- Your hub reports its health and map settings so we can help you. It never sends us your WiFi network name or password.
- We do not sell your personal information.
- This website sets no cookies of its own and uses no advertising or third-party trackers. It keeps its own statistics on how visitors find and use it, including IP addresses, on our own server.
- Payments are processed by Stripe. Your card number goes from your browser straight to Stripe; we never see or store it. On the checkout page, Stripe may use cookies and device information to prevent fraud.
- Email support@diymetar.com any time to see, correct or delete your information.
1. What we collect
When you buy
Your name, email address, phone number, shipping address, what you ordered and what you paid, and the IP address and browser the order came from, which we use to prevent fraud and abuse of our checkout.
Payments are processed by Stripe, our payment processor. Your card details go from your browser directly to Stripe; we never see or store your full card number. Stripe tells us the card brand and last four digits, which we keep with your order. Apple Pay and Google Pay payments also go through Stripe. Your cart is kept in your own browser until you check out.
When you order a custom map
The area and airports you ask for, the map files and proofs we make for you, and your approvals and edits.
When you email us
Your email address, your message, and anything you attach, such as photos, your hub's serial number, or your public IP address when you ask us to update your map.
From your map's hub
To deliver weather and updates, the hub connects to our servers. It sends:
- its serial number, MAC address, firmware version, and its address on your home network;
- health readings: WiFi signal strength and whether weather downloads succeed;
- your map settings: the airport list and display options;
- the public IP address it connects from, as any internet device does.
The hub never sends your WiFi network name or password. We do not receive your location beyond what an IP address and your chosen airports suggest.
When you request a custom build
Your name, email address, phone number if you give it, and what you tell us about the map you want.
When you visit this website
Our web server keeps standard technical logs: your IP address, browser type, the page requested, the page that sent you, and the time.
This website also keeps its own visit statistics, on our own server, to learn how people find us and use the site. Its script records:
- the pages you view, how long you stay and how far you scroll;
- the website or link that brought you here, including any campaign tags in the web address;
- the links and buttons you click, and the choices you make in the build planner, including the area and airports you type there;
- how far you get through a form: which fields you fill in and the options you pick, not what you type, until you press Send;
- errors in the page;
- your IP address and the approximate location and network provider it suggests;
- your device and browser details, such as screen size, language and time zone.
It keeps a random visitor ID in your browser's local storage so we can recognize a return visit. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes it. Visitors whose browser is set to a European time zone get an ID that lasts only while the tab is open. This website sets no cookies, uses no advertising or third-party tracking services, and nothing it records follows you to other websites.
Videos on this site come from YouTube and load only when you press play, using YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode. Once you play one, YouTube's privacy policy applies.
At checkout
Our checkout page loads Stripe's payment form from Stripe. To prevent fraud, Stripe collects information about your device and how you use the payment form, may set cookies, and may show a CAPTCHA. Stripe says it uses this information only for fraud prevention and security, never for advertising. Stripe's privacy policy and cookie policy apply to it. Our own pages, including the cart and your order page, set no cookies.
Orders placed in our previous store, run by GoDaddy, stay in GoDaddy's records, and GoDaddy's privacy policy applies to them.
2. How we use it
- To take, ship and support your order, and to make your map files and proofs.
- To run your map: delivering weather, installing firmware updates (the hub checks in about every 30 minutes and installs updates on its own), and installing paid upgrades you buy.
- To help when something goes wrong: the hub's health readings show us whether a map is online, which firmware it runs, and why weather is not downloading.
- To send order, shipping and service messages, and occasional product news to customers. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing never affects service messages.
- To keep our systems secure, prevent fraud, meet tax and legal requirements, and enforce our terms.
- To improve our products, using information about how maps perform.
- To understand how visitors find and use this website, and where it is unclear, so we can improve it.
3. Who we share it with
Only the companies that help us run the business, and only what they need to do their job:
- Stripe: payment processing and fraud prevention. Stripe receives your payment details directly from your browser, plus your name, email address, shipping address and the amount of your order.
- Google: our working copy of orders for building and shipping them, and encrypted backups of our order records.
- Pirate Ship: shipping labels, using your name and address.
- GoDaddy: our previous store, for orders placed there.
- Microsoft: our email.
- Akamai (Linode): the servers for this website, our store's order records, and map weather and updates.
- Amazon Web Services: our domain name service and the delivery of our order and service emails.
- Shipping carriers (such as USPS, UPS or FedEx): your name and address to deliver your order.
We may also share information when the law requires it, to protect our rights, customers or the public, or as part of a sale or merger of the business, in which case this policy continues to apply to it. We do not sell personal information, and we do not give it to anyone for their own marketing.
Your hub requests weather for your airport codes from public aviation weather services. Airport codes do not identify you.
4. How long we keep it
- Order records: as long as needed for accounting, tax and legal requirements. Encrypted backups of them are kept for up to 90 days.
- Support emails and map files: as long as they help us support your map.
- Hub readings: while your map is in service, and for a reasonable time after, so we can help if it comes back online.
- Website server logs, visit statistics and custom build requests sent through this website: up to 3 years, then deleted.
5. How we protect it
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, including limited access to customer information. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Your choices and rights
- See, correct or delete your information: email us. We may need to confirm it is you, and we keep what the law requires us to keep, such as tax records.
- Unsubscribe from marketing email with the link in any message, or by email.
- Your hub's data: ask us to delete the readings tied to your serial number. A hub that is plugged in and online keeps reporting, because it needs our servers for weather and updates.
- Cookies and visit statistics: this website sets no cookies of its own. To remove its visitor ID, clear this site's data in your browser. To have us delete the visit records tied to your IP address, email us. Stripe's cookies on the checkout page can be managed in your browser's settings; blocking them may stop the payment form from working.
Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and other states), you may have additional rights, such as knowing what we collect and deleting it, and not being treated differently for using them. Email us to use any of these rights and we will respond within the time the law requires.
7. Children
Our website and store are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has sent us information, email us and we will delete it.
8. Customers outside the US
We are based in the United States and process information here. By ordering or using a DIY METAR map from another country, you understand your information is handled in the US.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our products and the law change. The effective date at the top shows the latest version. If a change is significant, we will say so on this website.
